Where to begin?
I was directed to a
young man’s blog by a post on a board that I frequent. The title of the post was
“Gay kid forced to attend re-education camp.” Curious, I clicked on the link. The original poster was furious, and spittin’ mad about the plight of a certain 16 year old boy who had confessed to his parents that he is gay.
His parents are of the Baptist persuasion. As you can imagine, this did not go over well with them. A couple of weeks later, on May 28, 2005, his parents informed him that he would be attending a “fundamental Christian program for gays.” Two days later, he posted the rules he’d found (he wasn’t supposed to find them).
I strongly encourage you to read these rules. There are a lot of them. If you do, I warn you, you will most likely be angered (at minimum) or like me, finish with a slight migraine and feeling sick to your stomach.
I have posted these rules, along with a few comments at
another site (because this post was waaay too long to include them here).
And this is my response in that original thread, censored only slightly:
It's not just the horror of the camp. The unreal, unrealistic, mind-numbing, brain-washing rules they expect these people to uphold, but it's the fact that this isn't even voluntary. It's the fact that this young man's (yes damnit, I'll say it: this CHILD's) parents have failed him in the worst way possible. They have betrayed a trust no child should have to feel. His safe-haven, his sense of home.....gone. It's been ripped from him forever. Jesus...these parents think they have lost their child and are desperately trying to save him, but what they fail to see is they are fucking up royally.
My responses above are not exhaustive. I've only just begun, as a matter of fact. The stark contrast between these rules, and what they portray on their website is sickening too.
The name of the "ministry" is
Love in Action and the name of the camp is
A Safe Place. I find both of those names beyond ironic. Both are located in Memphis, TN.
I plan on writing a letter to the media. If anyone does the same, I suggest you keep it short, polite and offer plenty of references.
Any comments, further links, whatever, are welcome.
